Advocate - a.k.a. Hellraiser

We are looking for excellent writers and persuasive communicators who are comfortable speaking publicly in the forums of public opinion, state legislatures, and Congress. FTCR works on behalf of average people against some of the most powerful corporate lobbyists in the nation. We provide on-the-job training, but the faint of heart should not apply. If you are looking for a challenge and want to commit your life to working for justice, this is the job for you.

FTCR's scope includes politics, health care reform, consumer protection, insurance reform, legal system reform, and other state and federal matters.

  1. Issue Analysis and Development
    Frame the problem: analyze existing laws, legislation, and administrative rules. Formulate a public interest solution -- legislative, legal, or administrative. Identify support/opposition bases. Design a public education plan.
  2. Research
    Research and write educational materials (reports, fact sheets, opinion editorials and articles).
  3. Communication
    Engage the public through national, state and local media attention. Use of standard free media techniques -- editorial board meetings, editorial memoranda, op-ed, news releases, news conferences, news briefings, etc. Use new web-based communication technologies. Act as spokesperson to the media; respond to news media information requests;
  4. Coalition Building
    Build alliances of supporters, coordinate with coalition.
  5. Legislative Communications
    Work with members of legislators and their staff; respond to information requests; prepare legislative and/or administrative testimony.
  6. Fundraising
    Develop and maintain funding for programs among potential donors and within the foundation community through the development of grant proposals, meetings with key funders, and ongoing education of the larger foundation community about the project.
  7. Grassroots
    Work with FTCR's citizen organizing staff to implement strategies.
  8. Administrative
    Maintain necessary in-house computer databases.

  • College degree required; advanced degree preferred (JD, MBA or MPH).
  • Extensive experience with advocacy and public policy (in a labor union, public interest organization, public relations firm, or community group).
  • Exceptional strategic, analytical and persuasive communications (public speaking and writing) skills.
  • Excellent coalition building skills and familiarity with news media relations.
  • Strong computer skills, proficiency in Microsoft Word and internet experience required.
  • Can-do attitude and commitment to public interest work essential.
